• Utilizes Amazon AWS Lambda and API Gateway to host the GIPHY Proxy API.
  • This GIPHY mod requires a proxy server-side API script. But since vBCloud does not allow uploading custom server-side scripts, the mod utilizes Amazon AWS to host the proxy API for your forum.
  • For new AWS account, Amazon offers Free Tier with generous limits of 1 Million requests per month for 12 months. After the offer expires, Amazon charges minimally using the pay-as-you-go program. Based on my calculations, for 10,000 requests per month, you'll only be charged approximately 0.01 USD each for Lambda and API Gateway services by Amazon. These calculations are based from a US region of AWS. You may get different calculations based on the region of your AWS account. To get your own calculation, do the following steps:
    
    Lambda Calculator:
    1. Navigate to https://calculator.aws/#/addService
    2. Choose the "Search by location type" option.
    3. Choose your region from the "Choose a Region" dropdown. You'll see your assigned AWS Region at the upper-right corner of the AWS Console, next to your username.
    4. Enter "Lambda" in the "Find Service" search box.
    5. Locate the "AWS Lambda" from the results and click the "Configure" button.
    6. Choose the "Lambda Function - Without Free Tier" option. You're choosing that option because you're trying to calculate the cost after your 12 months of free tier is expired.
    7. Enter a value in the "Number of requests" textbox. Estimate the number of requests per month you think you will get when users start using the GIPHY Mod in your forum. For example, 10,000 requests. To give you an idea what's constitute "1 request"​, when you press the Search button in the GIPHY popup, it sends 1 request to AWS API Gateway which in turn sends 1 request to AWS Lambda. Whenever you scroll down to the end of the results in the GIPHY popup, it sends another request to find the next set of GIFs.
    8. Keep the default "per month" from the Unit dropdown.
    9. Enter 500 in the "Duration of each request (in ms)" textbox. This means that the API call takes 500 milliseconds to complete. This is more or less how long it takes the API to execute.
    10. Enter 128 in the "Amount of memory allocated" textbox and keep the defaulut "MB" unit.
    11. Enter 512 in the "Amount of ephemeral storage allocated" textbox and keep the defaulut "MB" unit.
    12. Click to expand the "Show calculations" section. You will see the "Lambda cost (monthly)" value. This is your monthly cost for the Lambda service. You can tweak the Number of requests to see different costs.
    
    API Gateway Calculator:
    1. Navigate to https://calculator.aws/#/addService
    2. Choose the "Search by location type" option.
    3. Choose your region from the "Choose a Region" dropdown.
    4. Enter "API Gateway" in the "Find Service" search box.
    5. Locate the "Amazon API Gateway" from the results and click the "Configure" button.
    6. Under the "HTTP APIs" section, choose "thousands" in the "HTTP API requests units" dropdown. You'll probably get thousands of requests per month and not millions.
    7. Enter number of requests in the "Requests" textbox. If you think you'll get 10,000 requests per month, then enter 10.
    8. Enter 1 in the "Average size of each request" textbox and keep the default "KB" unit. The GIPHY mod request size is approximately 1KB.
    9. Click to expand the "Show calculations" section. You will see the "HTTP API cost (monthly)" value. This is your monthly cost for the API Gateway service. You can tweak the Number of requests to see different costs.​
