If you were a vB programmer before, then it's pretty much the same as far as customizing style is concerned. Just like in older vB versions, you can customize styles by changing stylevars and adding custom CSS code in css_additional template.

sorry my mistake, currently looking around vBulletin 5.4.4 and have the first layout as in pic

but would like the more compact and crisper layout as in 2nd pic

Well, that's still a little broad. But here's the two of the changes I did to the homepage.
