Stupid question

Looking to use an image for a forum background. The problem I'm running into is trying to create it as a tile that will not have visible borders throughout the background.

Is there a word for the type of file I am trying to find? Vector images?

If it helps I'm looking for a topographical map design.

Can't you have a big background map image that will require no tiling?

Yes , but im looking to see if i can obtain the same design using a smaller image that would increase page load.
