another mod rewrite question

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to figure out a mod rewrite that will turn

/threads/15970-blah-blah "back" into /showthread.php?t=15970

Background is that I have been using VB4 for quite some time with mod re-write so I have 100s of links in google in the first format.
Now I upgraded to VB 5 and all these links go to 404 Error.
It is my understanding if I rewrote them back into the standard /showthread.php?t=1234 format , VB5 would be able to interpret them and I would not lose all those google indexed links.

I hope somebody can help me

is it no possible to do this? I've asked this in a number of forums and have not been able to get any answers

can somebody come up with a mod rewrite rule this will do this:
Step 1: cut off -moneybookers from example URL indexed this way in google: https://www.kasinoforum.com/threads/126-moneybookers
Step 2 replace /threads/ with /showthread.php?t= so https://www.kasinoforum.com/threads/126 becomes https://www.kasinoforum.com/showthread.php?t=126

Is this possible to do?
I'm willing to pay somebody a lunch for these rules

RewriteRule ^threads/([0-9]+)\-.*$ /showthread.php?t=$1 [L,R=301]
